Fugue was part of a collective exhibition that had intended to deal, in public space with political memories of a town that was destroyed twice during the two world wars (LEUVEN, 2003).My starting point were images of citizens fleeing, found in that city’s archives. I was attracted to the silhouettes, transformed by the belongings attached to their bodies and started a process creating different pieces. Finally I extracted the bundles from the archive images and transformed them into small sculptures, rebuilt in the original size in wood and lead- the heaviest stable material on earth, which is curiously also extremely malleable. They were then installed in a heterotopic site, an urban garden that served as a shortcut between two street levels and showed to the public as a site-specific installation. The passers by play an important role, as they can move the bundles, carry them, rearrange, and once they are in the site. Fugue alludes to the body ephemerality and the heaviness of history one has to embody.
